Box Brown's Best Comics of 2012

Once again we invited a number of our friends who are also cartoonists, comics publishers and editors to tell us what their favorite comics of 2012 were. We'll be posting those lists over the next couple weeks.

Box Brown started comics publisher Retrofit Comics and is responsible for The Fuckshits, Survivalist, and many more comics.

I've done a few of these this year and listen: we all know the big players (Building Stories, My Friend Dahmer, etc.) I'm going to try and focus on my favorite 2012 comics that some people may not have seen. In no particular order:

1. Transformer by Josh Bayer
At SPX Josh Bayer made three 8 page mini-comics that were drawn while he was at jury duty. All three are amazing but I really enjoyed transformer which is about Sly Stallone willing himself to turn into a car.

2. King of Comic Books by Noah Van Sciver
I love Noah Van Sciver's webcomic about traveling to Seattle in the Go-Go '90s. Might be too many inside comics jokes but hey that's right up my alley. It's also a beautiful sketchbook comic that includes these gorgeous blue washes.

3. Truthzone by Simon Hansellmann
Another inside comics webcomic but more sardonic and absurd. Simon Hanselmann, though living in Australia, somehow created the comic version of a Don Rickles routine featuring a cat, a wolfman, a witch and a shit-load of my favorite cartoonists make cameo appearances.

4. The Big Team Society League Book of Answers by Team Society League
A group of Toronto cartoonists (Aaron Costain, John Martz, Steve Wolfhard, and Zach Worton) changed the way I think about jam comics. Jam comics are created when two or more cartoonists collaborate on a single strip with each cartoonist drawing a panel. TSL's innovation (besides being remarkably LOL-inducing) is just to stop the strip when something funny happens. It sounds silly but it's a complete innovation! Also: the main character Georges is so cute and funny!

5. Cop Comics #1 by various
Michael Deforge, Mickey Z and Patrick Kyle do comics about cops. Need I say more
